Spain’s Garbine Muguruza won Grand Slam #2, and her first Slam at Wimbledon 7-5 6-0 over Venus Williams, a surprising result given Venus was likely a slight favorite at the start, and a closer match was certainly expected. The 23 year old Muguruza likely has more slams in her future, her all court game was on display against Venus, she hit with power from corner to corner and after saving two set points at 4-5 in the first, she broke Venus and went on to serve out the opening set. After that it was one way traffic, as the veteran Williams sister got sloppy, she was broken three times, and never challenged Muguruza’s serve, taking a bagel in the second set to hand Muguruza the trophy.
Williams, a five-time Wimbledon champion, still can claim two Slam finals to her name. The last time she did that was 2003, well over a decade ago. That said, she hasn’t won a Grand Slam since 2008, and has been in two semifinals, and three finals since that point. Venus will remain at seven Slams in total. Still, it has been an important year for the older Williams sister, showing the world she can still compete at the top levels. If she keeps on reaching Grand Slam finals, she absolutely can win another one, even at the age of 37 (or older).
Muguruza now has a real chance to attract a new generation of Spaniards to tennis, as she’s quickly becoming one of the most accomplished female Spaniards to ever play the sport. With a friendly personality, and an exciting game to boot, the Spanish federation has to be happy. Spanish tennis has been driven by Rafael Nadal for a very long time now, but it is very good for Spain to know that they have someone coming up who can keep the fans interested after Nadal eventually retires, whenever that is.
