Lucky Losers Jakub Bobro and Cody Fitzpatrick are back with a shorter episode of the Lucky Loser Tennis Podcast this time!
We start the talking with discussing the “Djokogassi”- the recent player-coach pairing between Novak Djokovic and Andre Agassi, a rather shocking one. How can Agassi help Djokovic? What can he teach him?
We move on the refusal of a main draw or qualifying Wild Card by Roland Garros for Maria Sharapova, taking a stance about morality, and then giving a qualifying wild card to Constant Lestienne, a player that served a ban for gambling.
We move on to some grass news, with Sharapova saying that she will go through Wimbledon qualifying, not asking for a Wild Card into main draw, Victoria Azarenka ending her maternal leave and playing the grass season, and Petra Kvitova still in Roland Garros–and almost sure to play the grass season and Wimbledon.
Next up is Rome, where the surprising winners Alexander Zverev and Elina Svitolina are the talk of the town. Zverev defeated Djokovic in straight sets to win the title, by far the youngest player to win a Masters 1000, and now the young German breaks the Top 10 at the age of 20. Svitolina became the No. 1 in the Race to Singapore with this Rome title, and one of the favorites for Roland Garros.
We both opted to pick outside Rome for our Lucky Losers of the Week, somebody that impressed us by their run, but didn’t take the title. I picked my countryman Juraj Masar, who out of the blue reached the final of an ITF $15K in Prague after basically disappearing in 2015. Masar battled heart arythmia, but now he is back and winning. Cody chose Katie Boulter, the young British woman he played Laura Robson in the final of an ITF $60K in Japan.
Cody took this Tennis Hipster, a segment where we introduce a player unknown the most. Cody chose to introduce Tennys Sandgren, who won the USTA Wild Card Challenge for Roland Garros, and is going to play the first slam of his career.
