Canadian women’s national team head coach: Beverly Priestman
On Wednesday head coach Bev Priestman revealed her roster for the October window ahead of the two matches they will play in Spain against Morrocco and Argentina. The teams are scheduled to play in Cadiz which is in the southern part of the country.
“To play two Women’s World Cup opponents with different styles ahead of the draw is exciting and will only support the invaluable experiences we will accumulate in the remaining four FIFA windows,” Priestman said. “We know that in a World Cup, the variation of tiers and styles is much greater compared to an Olympics. Therefore, this is a perfect fit at this stage given our recent and future Tier one fixtures. The squad is still missing some key players, however, at this stage, it does allow us to assess and re-assess players that have done well in our environment, in club or college ahead of 2023.”
A notable return to the team and a player who was omitted from the last window and wasn’t selected for the Concacaf W Championship roster was Évelyne Viens, the Quebec native who plays in Sweden. Bev Priestman met the media to discuss the roster and the games ahead.
“Both teams will defend the low block and it actually gives us the chance to play the game with a killer instinct and it is a great challenge for our players when getting ready for the World Cup”. She went on to add ” it will be two different challenges.”
An issue at hand is playing time and unfortunately for Janine Beckie who made the move from Europe to NWSL and Adriana Leon who signed at Manchester United they have not been playing much but Preistman thinks this window will help in regards to playing time.
Respect the opposition and find the perfect blueprint
Kailen Sheridan who is now the number one in the net won’t be playing both games as Preistman hinted that Lysanne Proulx or Sabrina D’Angelo could get the start but didn’t confirm which game they would play. She was asked about the game plan for Morocco and she thinks they could be a dangerous opponent.
“We have to pay respect to them because they are going to be at a World Cup and they are great at crosses and set pieces and we have to be ready for that and learn how to beat their block and set plays because they are a tier one team and at a World Cup you never know who you are going to play.”
The team will have 10 days to build off the last window where they made the trip down under and managed to win both games against Australia.
“We have to find the perfect blueprint for beating these teams and they are not as offensive so it will be good for us and it gives us much-needed experience going into a World Cup and something we can build on and they are solid teams who are both going as well.”
Canada will play both games at the Estadio Municipal De Chapin in Jerez, Spain starting with Argentina on October 6th before wrapping up against Morocco on the 10th, and both games will be streamed on Canada Soccer’s social media channels and YouTube.
