Hello All! Welcome to a holiday special edition of Americans Abroad Weekly. Despite the Omicron variant postponing several matches, plenty of Americans were in action across Europe this past week.
Americans Abroad Weekly: Yunus Musah and Joe Scally Contribute
Yunus Musah scores again, Joe Scally impresses at Borussia Monchengladbach, and Pulisic starts, but not much to show for it, again.
Musah scores in seconds in Copa Del Rey 2nd round
Yunus has really made the Copa Del Rey his own, as two weeks ago he notched a goal for Valencia against CD Utrillas. This past week he scored within the first minute for Valencia, in what ended up being a 120 minute thriller that saw Valencia topping CD Arenteiro. Musah continues great form for Valencia, and he’s playing consistently at the age of 18. So much to be excited for with Musah.
Joe Scally assist for Monchengladbach
Despite the loss to Frankfurt, and continued struggles for Borussia Monchengladbach, another 18 year old American has been a bright spot. Joe Scally assisted the opening goal for Gladbach’s Florian Newhouse, as Scally, like Musah, has continually gotten quality minutes for his club. Just another bright spot for Berhalter to possibly call up to the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers.
Christian Pulisic starts, underwhelms, for Chelsea
Oh another week with underwhelming Christian Pulisic performances. He started against Everton and Wolves, acting as a center forward, not his natural position as winger. Now I’m not trying to make excuses for Pulisic, but I don’t expect him to thrive if Tuchel continues to play him out of position. The rumors to Barcelona continue to ramp up as the January window approaches, though a move will be unlikely.
Teenagers continue to thrive in top 5 leagues, something we never thought we’d see for the USMNT. What a time to be a fan.
