RapKids Rolling: Colorado Downs Quakes Behind Cole Bassett and Jonathan Lewis Goals

The Rapids had their best half of offensive set pieces of the year. Lalas Abubakar and Andre Shinyashiki both had looks. Jack Price put the ball into good areas with goalkeeper Daniel Vega mostly staying on his line.

Kellyn Acosta appeared to score the opening goal a half hour in. Sam Vines and Price played a two-man game on the touchline to get the ball to him at the top corner of the box. He cut inside and curled the ball around Vega to score. Referee David Fischer consulted VAR and ruled the goal offside in the build up.

Cole Bassett avenged his teammate five minutes later. Again, Colorado got a set piece. Bassett delayed his run and found space right in front of Vega to head Price’s cross into the back of the net.

Colorado deserved to be up 2-0 at halftime. Jonathan Lewis made it so in the 50th minute. Price and Acosta passed the ball quickly up the middle for the 23-year-old to slot it home.

Shinyashiki made it 3-0 in the 70th minute. Tommy Thompson was unable to control the ball on his first touch on Shinyashiki’s cross. It went into the net for an own goal.

Nicolas Mezquida and Shinyashiki scored in the final 10 minutes to make the final score 5-0.

Three Takeaways:

The RapKids are more than alright: Cole Bassett and Jonathan Lewis have joined the kids from Philadelphia in the ‘MLS young players to Europe?’ discussion. They were fantastic in this game and have gotten better in every performance since the restart.

San Jose in crisis: San Jose has lost four games in September by four or more goals. They haven’t won a game since the MLS is Back Tournament. Questions need to be asked of this club.

Rolling to the playoffs: Colorado has now won three of their last four games and has a good matchup this weekend, home to Sporting KC.
