MLS is Back Group d

MLS is Back Group D: Rapids get a point

The game started off level as the Rapids had good energy. They had already been eliminated early in the day when Sporting KC defeated Real Salt Lake.

Colorado opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Diego Rubio won the ball on a possible foul against Ozzie Alonso. That sprung a counterattack that led to Nicolas Benezet delivering a great pass to Kei Kamara who nearly passed the ball into the back of the net to score.

The Loons tied the game up in the 36th minute. Ethan Finlay had a great flick on a set piece at the near post to get the ball past Keegan Rosenberry and goalkeeper William Yarbrough.

Finlay made it 2-1 in the 43rd minute off a great passing sequence that disorganized the Rapids backline. Romain Metanire made a great run and pass to set up the goal.

Just before the hour mark, Colorado made it 2-2. Jonathan Lewis scored on a thunderbolt off a second chance on a set-piece. Both teams had fair chances to find a winner, but could not get it done.

Sporting Wins Group D

Thanks to that result, paired with Sporting KC’s 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake in the Morning, Sporting KC ended up winners of Group D, with Minnesota in second, and RSL clinching a Wild Card Spot.

Sporting KC will now face one of the four Wild Card teams, while Minnesota will end up playing the Columbus Crew. Real Salt Lake will get the Earthquakes.
