Christine Sinclair breaks record, Canada wins over St. Kitts and Nevis

The Canadian women’s soccer team started their Olympic qualification with an 11-0 win against St. Kitts and Nevis. It’s a positive result that makes Canada closer to qualifying for the Olympics. Canada dominated the game from the beginning to the end of the game. Canada’s defense showed up, as St. Kitts and Nevis didn’t have a shot on target.

While this is not the best measuring stick for Canada, they got the job done. Canada has made progress for trying to qualify for the Summer Olympics.

St. Kitts and Nevis — a first-time participant in Olympic qualifying — have found out how good the top teams are in Concacaf. They were defending the ball for most of the game, only having 26 percent of the possession. Adriana Leon scored four goals against St. Kitts and Nevis. However, the story of the night was Christine Sinclair, who was the first player to score a goal.

Sinclair scored the first goal for Canada at the penalty spot. This allowed her to tie for most goals in women’s soccer history. She tied Abby Wambach’s record of 184 goals. However, later in the first half, she broke the record, scoring her 185th international goal. She is now the all-time leading international goal-scorer, male or female.

Jayde Riviere also found her first professional goal, and the hat-trick goal by Leon was particularly impressive. They were great goals that were scored in bad angles.

Starting her career with the Vancouver Breakers and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, the native from British Columbia has stepped up in big moments. These moments include scoring the game-winning goal against China in the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. What made that goal special was that it was scored in her home province in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Sinclair also scored other notable goals scored in the 2012 and 2016 Summer Olympics. In 2012, Sinclair scored three goals in a 4-3 loss to the United States in a highly contested match. She also scored one goal against England in the Olympics quarterfinals. This included scoring three goals in the 2016 Summer Olympics, which included scoring the game-winning goal against Brazil in a 2-1 victory.

She was also part of the ups and downs of the women’s national team program. Sinclair made it to semi-finals of the 2003 FIFA Women’s World Cup and failing to qualify for the 2004 Olympics. Most notably, Sinclair was there when Canada bowed out of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup with three losses in three games. A year later, they won a bronze medal in Great Britain. In 2016, they won bronze medal again in Rio, winning against Germany and Australia in the group stage.

Her legacy in the international scene goes well beyond Canada as many well-known international women’s player gave Sinclair their congrats. This includes the players, media and even the prime minister of Canada.

There is a lot to talk about Sinclair in this article. However, the most important thing was winning 11-0 against St. Kitts and Nevis. Canada’s next two opponents in the group will be much harder as explained previously. This will include their next game against Jamaica.

Jamaica is Next for Team Canada

The next game for Canada will be against Jamaica tomorrow. This will not be an easy match as Jamaica will be in desperate need of points. Jamaica lost 1-0 to Mexico and will be looking to keep their Olympic hopes alive. Like the group stage game against St. Kitts and Nevis, they will play at H-E-B Park in Edinburg, Texas.
