Toronto FC signs attacking midfielder Alejandro Pozuelo

Toronto FC is bolstering their attacking midfield with the signing of Spanish player Alejandro Pozuelo from Belgium club, Genk.

Toronto, Ontario, Canada (March 4, 2019) — Toronto FC bagged a victory this past weekend in the opening action of the MLS regular-season. However, that doesn’t mean that Ali Curtis is finished putting the pieces together.

Instead, just two days after Toronto’s victory on the road against the Philadelphia Union, the club announced the signing of Alejandro Pozuelo. He will join the club has a Designated Player. Meanwhile, the Spaniard is an attacking midfielder who recently featured for Genk in Belgium.

With Genk, Pozuelo made 175 appearances where he tallied 25 goals. However, his talents are for creating plays, as he recorded 60 assists during his time in Belgium. Curtis, the new general manager of Toronto FC, called Pozuelo an “excellent player.”

“He is the best player on the best team in Belgium’s top division,” Curtis said. “Obviously, and for so many reasons, we would like him to join us now, but we look forward to his arrival on March 18. We are very excited for the 2019 season and adding another important piece to a group that already has a lot of quality only makes us stronger.”

Pozuelo began his career in his birth city of Seville with Betis Deportivo Balompié. He featured for the second-division club 42 times from 2010-12. However, he was promoted to the first-team in 2011, spending time on and off with the first and second team. He regularly featured for the first team in 2013.

Pozuelo moved to the English Premier League in 2013, signing with Swansea City for one season. He made 22 appearances, but failed to score a single goal in England. His career then took him back to Spain, where he featured 11 times for Rayo Vallecano for one season.

In 2015, Pozuelo made a home and career in Belgium, remaining with Genk for over three seasons. Meanwhile, Pozuelo has never made an international appearance for Spain.

What’s Next?

Toronto FC are out of the CONCACAF Champions League after falling to Panama club Club Atlético Independiente de la Chorrera in the Round of 16. Because of this, Toronto does not have a mid-week match.

Instead, Toronto FC will rest and wait to face off against the New England Revolution on March 17. Toronto has three-straight matches at home, starting with the Revolution at BMO Field.
