US Open Cup Final

LA Galaxy Host Orange County SC: Undertones Of A New Look SuperClasico

This is the first matchup between the Galaxy and OCSC since the USL side’s rebrand. This is also their first matchup since Orange County became the USL affiliate of MLS expansion side Los Angeles Football Club. This match could set the tone for the return of the SuperClasico when LAFC begins play next year.

LA Galaxy II has played Orange County in USL play this year. OCSC won 4-0 on May 6th. Los Dos have been a bit of a mess this year though given all the changes that have gone on with the first team. It’s also no secret that the Galaxy use Los Dos for development more than fielding a competative USL side. With a match involving the first team in competition, both sides should be taking it very seriously.

OCSC did play a home game this past weekend, losing 1-0 to Real Monarchs. They won’t be bothered by any travel for this match, other than the usual Southern California rush hour. They will have some heavy legs coming off only three days of rest.

The Galaxy on the other hand are on the mend. They have not played a game in 11 days. Jermaine Jones was last listed as questionable coming off an MCL sprain. Daniel Steres is recovering from a hamstring injury. Even if he is unable to play in tonight’s game, he should be on his way to returning to the Starting XI.

OCSC will be taking it seriously. Their players could see several players they are familiar with from USL play, such as Dave Romney, Nathan Smith, or Bradley Diallo. Several of these players could be looking to make the move to MLS knowing they’re playing the rival of their affiliate.

The game tonight could set a tone and restart the SuperClasico as a legitimate rivalry.
