Price Atkinson and Steve Carney bring you the news, insight and analysis of service academy football on Yards and Stripes.
The guys start the show with the news that despite his uncertainties going into the weekend, Price has officially become a fan of Taylor Swift. After taking his daughter to see the singer’s concert in Indianapolis, it’s clear that there’s a genuine respect for the performance she puts on, and how well she connects to her fanbase. They also talk about Price seeing Chiefs tight end (and Swift’s boyfriend) Travis Kelce at the show, and what easter eggs the singer drops to let fans know he’s in attendance.
Wishing Navy’s Pete Medhurst The Best In His New Health Battle
But the tones shifts when they discuss how they learned that Navy broadcaster Pete Medhurst was diagnosed last week with a brain tumor. The guys send their well-wishes to their long-time friend and one of the biggest advocates of service academy athletics you’ll ever find. They talk about the procedure that he underwent over the weekend, and how he is preparing for rehab and radiation treatments. Price and Steve know if anyone is ready to beat cancer and return to the booth to do his job, it’s Pete.
Midshipmen Fall Flat Against Rice, While Army Handles Air Force Without Daily
They then turn to Navy’s flat performance against Rice. The Midshipmen had to wait out over five hours of weather delays before getting the game in. Coach Brian Newberry’s players looked like a team that was stretched beyond the breaking point of even a service academy team. A second consecutive loss might prevent Navy from appearing in the College Football Playoff, but they still have a chance at the AAC title.
Army ensured the Commander-in-Chief Trophy will be decided outside Washington on December 14. The Black Knights easily handled Air Force in the second leg of the series 20-3 despite not having star quarterback Bryson Daily for the game. Price and Steve discuss why it’s better to lose Daily for a game against a 1-6 Falcons team as opposed to its next few opponents.
All Three Academies Look For Conference Wins
The show then turns to the upcoming week, as all three academies have conference matchups. Navy travels to Tampa to face the rebounding USF Bulls. Steve breaks down his alma mater, and why the quarterback matchup is so important for the Midshipmen defense. Army visits Denton, Texas for their first game against North Texas since 2017. Price talks about why having Bryson Daily back to take on the Mean Green is so vital for the Black Knights. Steve points out that a win against North Texas virtually guarantees Army a spot in the AAC title game. Air Force welcomes Fresno State to Falcon Stadium, as they still look for their first conference win. Price and Steve discuss the Bulldogs short passing game, which will look to pick apart the Falcons secondary.
The guys follow up by honoring a fallen service member with the Travis Manion Foundation Honor Roll. They finish by giving their predictions for the three contests on Saturday.
