As the college football season heats up out west, Get Off My Pylon dives deep into the most compelling stories.

This week, Matt Zemek kicks off with how Oregon may have won their game against Boise State, but their performance has raised a number of red flags. The Ducks offense has failed to impress, scoring just 24 points against Idaho and struggling against Boise State’s defense. Special teams saved them this week, but with Ohio State looming on October 12, significant improvements are needed.

Great Starts For A Pair Of West Coast Teams In new Conferences

Meanwhile, USC has played as well as you could ask for in their move to the Big Ten, continuing with a win over Utah State Saturday. Fans may be praising defensive coordinator D’anton Lynn now, but the real test is coming once conference play starts. But with other Big Ten teams like Iowa and Michigan struggling (both the Hawkeyes and Wolverines lost this week), USC’s early performance is a promising sign.  Cal also had fans wondering how they would fare moving to the ACC this year, but the Bears got a huge win this past week defeating Auburn on the road.

Matt also previews the upcoming rivalry games which have a different feel, with the Apple Cup between Washington and Washington State and the Oregon-Oregon State “Civil War” game now take place outside conference play. Since they are no longer at the end of the conference season, they’ll add an interesting twist to the schedule for all four teams. Both matchups promise to be thrilling, with Washington State and Oregon State showing strong performances early in the season.

The Mountain West conference also looks to have a pair of strong schools who will look for a spot in the College Football Playoff. UNLV has dominated its first two games, while San Jose State also improved to 2-0 under new head coach Ken Niumatalolo after they handled Air Force.
