Jason Benetti can best be described as a renaissance man. While he’s the relatively new breed of sports broadcasters including Joe Davis, Adam Amin and a few others, he not only understands history, he embraces it. Case in point in part one of this absolutely wildly entertaining episode, Benetti draws on part of his personality to his upbringing.
“I was a good student in grammar school, probably too polite at times. There was really no edge except I would go home and my parents and I would watch Robin Williams and George Carlin and Dennis Miller and Dennis Leary. I always appreciated really good comedians.”
Now you understand why Benetti’s broadcasts are more than just tinged with humor and good one-liners.
Benetti also has a law degree but didn’t use that as a back up in case his broadcasting career didn’t blossom.
“If you’re going to do this ( referring to law school) it can’t be an excuse. I hit law school as hard as I did broadcasting,” tells us on the show.
Benetti credits his career to the wonderful radio department and Homewood Flossmoor High School in suburban Chicago and Syracuse University which had a great media school.
While afflicted with Cerebral Palsy, something he discusses at great length in part two of this podcast, Benetti loves what he’s doing. His dream while growing up was to be the voice of the Chicago White Sox. He’s about to start his 8th season with them.
Benetti is also a prime voice at Fox Sports where he’ll call the game of the week while also doing college basketball. When I mentioned he has a full plate Benetti replied, “Yea, I do need a vacation!”
In this thoroughly entertaining part one of the “Tell me a story I don’t know” podcast, Benetti also discusses MLB’s recent rule changes including the pitch clock, something he and fellow broadcasters will have to adjust to starting now.
