For the last time this season, a service academy had the week off. So Price Atkinson and Steve Carney had only two games to recap on this week’s episode of Yards and Stripes in preparation for Week 5.

Army Falls in Overtime Thriller

Army’s first American Conference home game ended in heartbreak as the Black Knights fell 45–38 in overtime to North Texas. Despite freshman RB Caleb Hawkins scoring four touchdowns and QB Cale Hellums rallying the team late, turnovers proved costly. Army has now dropped two straight overtime games by a combined 10 points. Head coach Jeff Monken emphasized the need to clean up turnovers before Thursday’s short-week matchup at East Carolina.

Air Force Outlasted by Boise State

Air Force kept pace with Boise State into the third quarter, but explosive plays doomed the Falcons in a 49–37 loss. Broncos RB Dylan Riley delivered a five-touchdown performance, including a 75-yard reception. QB Liam Sarky impressed in his first career start for Air Force, but defensive lapses and penalties cost them crucial stops. The Falcons now sit at 0–2 in Mountain West play heading into a must-win matchup against Hawaii.

Navy Eyes Continued Momentum

After a bye week, Navy looks to extend its perfect start when it hosts Rice. The Owls bring a punishing rushing attack and rank among the nation’s best in time of possession. Head coach Brian Newberry’s defense will be tested against a disciplined opponent that has committed just two turnovers all season. Saturday’s clash in Annapolis could be one of the toughest early-season tests for the Midshipmen.

Looking Ahead To The Rest of Week 5

Week 5 features Army at ECU on Thursday night, and Air Force battling Hawaii at home on Saturday afternoon. With each academy facing pressure to correct mistakes and seize momentum, this weekend promises to be pivotal for all three programs.
