Formula E-xplained: Why Are There Three Titles at Stake?

Formula E has three World Championship titles to fight for. How do these work?

Formula E, the electric championship debuted in 2014, with the category completing ten seasons. During the first six years, Formula E had two championship titles, the Drivers’ and the Teams’ championships.

Starting from Season 7, Formula E was considered a World Championship. Since the previous season, the tenth one, a new standing was added: the one reserved for the manufacturer.

Formula E Drivers’ Championship

Formula E is the only single-seater FIA category, excluding Formula 1, to be considered a ‘World Championship’. The label was added to the electric championship only after Season 6, with Nyck De Vries becoming the first driver to be crowned FE World Champion. Since 2020, Stoffel Vandoorne, Jake Dennis and Pascal Wehrlein have also obtained this status.

The Drivers’ championship functions like every other traditional category. It follows the FIA’s standardized point system, as used in F1. The winner conquers twenty-five points during every race, while the tenth collects one point, with the fastest lap adding one point.

FE has a different element from the rest of the most well-known motorsport championships, giving three extra points to the pole sitter. With Formula E‘s competitive nature, the Drivers’ title fight is usually fought until the last race weekend of the season, with a pack of three or four drivers racing for the win until the last race of the calendar.

Formula E Teams’ Championship

The FE Teams’ Championship sees the eleven teams on the grid fighting for the title. Every team owns the points collected by both their drivers during the race weekend. The standings also include the fastest lap point and the pole position award. During the past seasons, Porsche, Jaguar, Envision, and Andretti have been the main forces to fight for the title. The other teams have composed a balanced midfield.

In Season 10, the Teams’ Championship was won by Jaguar with Mitch Evans and Nyck Cassidy. It was the first team title won by the team. During the past years, the Teams’ titles were more predictable than the Drivers’ championships. Even if most of the time the champion has already been decided during the last seasonal round, the standing was more outlined.

Formula E Manufacturers’ Championship

In Season 10, Formula E introduced a new title: the Manufacturers’ Championship. The electric category consists of six manufacturers: Electric Racing Technologies, Jaguar, Mahindra Racing, Nissan, Porsche, and STELLANTIS.

The Manufacutres’ points system works the as the Teams’Championship, with each manufacturer collecting the points of the teams they power, including the three points for the pole position and the one of the fastest lap. The winner receives a badge to put on the helmets, cars, and team apparel during the next season, which will be seen during Season 11 for the first time.

The first Manufacturers’ trophy was won by Jaguar, who collected 448 points, four more than Porsche, second with 444. These were the main forces to fight during Season 10, while Nissan finished in third place with only 271 points. In season 11 the situation could change, with the new ‘Kiro Race Co’ – last year ERT – which became Porsche-powered.
