Season 10 is behind us now, with the Gen3 Evo era upon us.
Formula E finished Season 10 one month ago and is preparing for the new championship, starting in December. Season 11 will present many news, such as the presence of the new Gen3 Evo car.
During the race weekend of the Monaco E-Prix, Formula E presented the new Gen3 Evo car, which will be used during Season 11 and Season 12. During the past two seasons, the electric championship used the Gen3 car and is now working on the Gen4 one. The fourth generation won’t debut before 2027, but the drivers will use a new car while waiting for the next big change.

Gen3 Evo: car general review
Gen3 Evo car presents a 30% faster acceleration than a Formula 1 car, meaning 36% faster than the Gen3 one. The car will present a 0-60 mph in 1.82 seconds and will have a 5-10% bettered grip. The Gen3 Evo car is bringing a big change on track, with Hankook – the official Formula E tyres provider – offering a new compound made from 35% recycled materials. Formula E decided to present the Gen3 Evo after the complaints of teams and drivers.
The Gen3 car didn’t bring the speed and efficiency hoped at the beginning of the project, lacking grip and making the past two years difficult. The new car wants to give a better experience, with a four-wheel drive which will generate energy and aid traction. The drivers will benefit from this, with the Gen3 Evo consenting a better driveability on medium and low speed. The gain between the two generations will be 2%, according to Formula E. The Gen3 Evo car also changes some visible elements, having a more similar shape to a Formula 2 car.
Formula E to solve Gen3 issues
One of the Gen3 car’s bigger problems was the high number of wing damages. Between Gen2 and Gen3 the front wing became more flexible, but also more breakable, with drivers and teams losing many points along the season due to this issue.
The Gen3 Evo car presents a more robust front wing, which will also bring a better drag. Another issue that occurred with Gen3 was Attack Mode‘s lack of function. The overtake instrument hasn’t worked with the Gen3 car, with drivers only losing time instead of conquering more speed. The presence of a stronger tyre grip on the Gen3 Evo car should bring back the previous success of the Attack Mode.
Awaiting the bigger change
Gen3 Evo cars will be active on track in November, during the winter tests in Valencia. Drivers and teams will work with the new car, hoping to find better confidence. The 2024-2026, however, is just an intermediate phase. Formula E is already working on Gen4, the car which will bring the greatest changes to the category. Gen3 Evo won’t provide a big change in terms of speed, but the main change will be on traction. The 600W regenerative breaking capacity will provide nearly 50% of the energy used during a race, as per the Gen3 car. The top speed will be around 200mph, the same reached by the previous car.
