Following this weekend’s eventful Azerbaijan Grand Prix, fans saw Lance Stroll take a very respectable third place. The Williams team will certainly be trying hard over the next few races to extend their lead over Toro Rosso in the F1 Constructor’s Championship battle.
Lance Stroll propels Williams to fifth in standings as Toro Rosso aim to fight back
The Canadian’s third place podium, in his rookie year in F1, ensured that the Williams team took current fifth place in the Constructor’s Championship. The points difference between Williams and Toro Rosso stands at a narrow four points. Toro Rosso boss, Franz Tost, commented: “we knew from the beginning that both Canada and Azerbaijan are race tracks that are not in our favour but, nevertheless, we scored some points.”
“Unfortunately, we’ve lost the fifth position in the constructors championship to Williams. Now we have to fight back but I am positive that, earlier or later, we will be back in that position.” However, Williams will be keen themselves not to give up fifth place too easily.
Toro Rosso’s race had not started as promisingly as they would have hoped. Carlos Sainz Jr narrowly avoided a crash with his teammate, Daniil Kvyat. Sainz, with the help of the red flag, managed to make his way through some key mid field places to finish a commendable eighth place finish.
“Carlos did a very good comeback, as he was able to overtake some rivals. Then the race was red flagged, which meant we could put on the super-soft tyres,” said Tost. “We now go to Austria, where we hope to be prepared as well as possible in order to finish with both cars in the points.”
With Williams’ on going competitiveness and with Stroll eager for more podium places, the constructors championship battle is far from over.
