That season marked the team’s last win in the Constructors’ Championship – before 2024 – the result of a perfect mix of talented drivers Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard, and a competitive car, the McLaren MP4/13. All of this was driven by the strategic mind of Ron Dennis.

Nigel Stepney was one of Ferrari‘s most important figures. A very talented mechanic, his skills allowed him to work his way up through various teams to Ferrari, where he became Technical Manager during the Schumacher era.
In 2006, everything changed with the announcement of the end of the relationship between Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, and Scuderia Ferrari. Stepney thought he was next in line for the role of Technical Director, but instead, it was given to Mario Almondo.
Feeling betrayed and disappointed, Stepney couldn’t leave due to contractual obligations and began a war against Ferrari.
Stepney began stealing confidential information from Ferrari and sharing it with Mike Coughlan, McLaren’s chief designer. These documents were very valuable, containing crucial details about the Ferrari car, giving McLaren a major advantage.
In 2007, both McLaren and Ferrari were fighting for the Constructors’ Championship in a tense and hard-fought battle.
The story came to light when a printer found a 780-page Ferrari document in Coughlan’s hands. Ferrari started an internal investigation and took the case to the FIA, accusing him of espionage.

The Investigation and the Final Verdict
During the investigation, the FIA discovered that McLaren members had access to Ferrari’s documents. The team, however, denied using this information to develop their car.
Despite this, the FIA concluded that McLaren had taken advantage of Ferrari’s confidential data and excluded the team from the 2007 Constructors’ Championship.
Drivers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso were allowed to continue racing and keep their points since they were not directly involved in the scandal.
