Formula 1’s off-season is a busy time, with teams working hard to be ready for the new season. From mandatory breaks to preseason tests, every detail matters as they prepare for another exciting year.
Discover the intense preparations Formula 1 teams undertake in the off-season, from car development to preseason testing, as they gear up for the 2025 Formula 1 season.
How Formula 1 Teams Gear Up for the New Season
Formula 1 may have wrapped up its final race in Abu Dhabi, but the off-season is anything but quiet.
While fans eagerly await the return of racing in March, teams are hard at work behind the scenes, ensuring they’re ready for the challenges of the upcoming season.
The Mandatory Break
In compliance with FIA regulations, all F1 teams must shut down operations for a mandatory nine-day period from December 24 to early January.
This pause allows team members across departments, from engineering to the power unit division, to enjoy some well-earned rest after a demanding season.
Once this break ends, it’s back to work as the focus shifts entirely to the development of next season’s cars, culminating in their debut during preseason testing in Bahrain.

Rebuilding for the Next Season
At their factories, teams dive into the complex process of preparing for the new season.
In addition to finalising their new single-seaters, engineers and designers analyze simulation data, test innovations, and refine strategies for the year ahead.
The previous season’s cars also return to the factories, where they are carefully dismantled. Parts that can contribute to future projects are salvaged, while the remaining components are either displayed, stored, or sent back to suppliers.
For instance, McLaren returns Mercedes‘ engines, and Haas ships Ferrari-supplied power units back to Maranello.
Another route that old cars can take is being exposed in a museum. Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari from 2019 is currently in the Musée de l’automobile de Monaco.
Others are in storage, while some others are used during events like the Festival of Speed.
The Role of Marketing and PR
An important, and frequently overlooked, effort comes from the marketing and PR departments.
Marketing and PR teams play a crucial role during the off-season.
They keep fans engaged through exclusive content, global events, campaigns, etc., ensuring the excitement for Formula 1 stays alive until the new season begins.

Preseason Testing: A Crucial Step
Once the new project for the car is done and the season is about to start, all the teams gather for pre-season testing.
For the 2025 season, the FIA confirmed once again the International Circuit of Bahrain for testing. The track will host the event from the 26th to the 28th of February.
During these three days, Formula 1 teams will show the new cars in action for the first time.
Teams will assess the performance of their cars, compare track data with wind tunnel and simulation results, and make adjustments as needed.
The tests also give mechanics the chance to practice pit stops and improve their skills.
What to Expect from the 2025 Cars?
With the new regulations coming in 2026, the cars for 2025 will mostly be improvements of this season’s cars, not completely new designs.
For example, McLaren had a very strong car in 2024, so it’s likely they will keep the same chassis and make it better.
Other teams, especially the ones that struggled, might decide to make bigger changes to improve their performance.
The 2025 season will be a chance for teams to build on their successes or correct past mistakes. Fans can expect exciting battles on track as everyone aims to start the year strong.
The countdown to Bahrain has already begun.
