Lando Norris wrapped up McLaren’s Constructors’ championship with victory in Abu Dhabi. Despite this much-needed win having arrived, Norris has had a complex 2024 season.
Lando Norris Leaves 2024 Formula 1 Season with Lessons Learned
From career-defining highs to costly mistakes, Lando Norris’ 2024 season showcased resilience, growth, and the pressure of chasing perfection in Formula 1.
A poor start to the season
For McLaren, the start of the season has not been great. With Red Bull dominating, the Woking-based team has had to deal with a lot of difficulties.
An uncompetitive car at the start of the season, wrong strategies and a lot of frustration have been a part of this journey to the title win.
In the first four months, the team turned the car upside down, trying to solve the problems. The first months were the most crucial and the most delicate.
Lando Norris often appeared frustrated and tired in interviews. The frustration of a driver who has a lot to give but does not have the means (or the car) to do it.
Lando Norris’s first career win
It was a scorching day in Miami when everything finally clicked for Norris. The updates to the car had delivered, and for the first time in a long while, he found the balance he had been chasing.
Norris approached the race with quiet confidence as if he knew deep down that this would be his moment. And on May 5, 2024, that moment arrived. With adrenaline coursing through him and eyes alight with determination, he crossed the finish line to claim his first-ever Formula 1 victory.
This was no ordinary win – it was the culmination of years of effort and longing. While others had celebrated victories, endured defeats, and navigated the shifting sands of teams and opportunities, Norris had waited.
With that triumph, he opened a new chapter in his career, and in McLaren’s storied history. It was a victory forged by relentless determination – of a driver finding his moment and a team refusing to give up, enduring setbacks with resilience.
McLaren, unfazed by early Red Bull dominance, seized their chance and began their resurgence with Norris leading the way.

Driver error
As highlighted earlier, Norris’ season was a mix of highs and lows, with some costly mistakes overshadowing key opportunities. In Zandvoort, a sluggish start from pole position saw him lose the lead – a recurring issue with his race starts this year. These missteps at the start line proved costly, appearing several times throughout the season.
One of the most notable errors came in Brazil, where a misjudgment at the start of the Grand Prix earned Norris a penalty. Despite clear instructions not to restart during a caution period, he proceeded on the second lap, compounding the mistake.
Another misstep occurred in China during the Sprint race. Despite securing pole position, Norris faltered off the line, dropping to sixth and losing four valuable points.
These blunders not only hurt his performance on track but also exposed him to relentless media scrutiny. Critics were quick to label him an “average driver,” focusing on his inability to consistently nail race starts. What many overlook, however, is the immense pressure drivers face over a gruelling race weekend. For someone like Norris, who is his own harshest critic, this added weight can be particularly taxing.
Yet, despite a season filled with challenges and 24 demanding races, Norris ended on a triumphant note. His victory in Abu Dhabi clinched the Constructors’ championship for McLaren.

What did Norris teach us in this 2024 season?
Lando Norris taught us that no one is perfect. Even the greatest drivers have made (and continue to make) mistakes on the track.
There are always difficulties, especially when you are at the beginning of the season and you find yourself having to drive a fairly complex car.
Lando Norris has won many victories this year. He smiled, he cried, and he celebrated with his team every victory.
Lando hasn’t had a bad season. But he still has to improve. He still has little experience fighting at the front, but this year in particular for him, has been a year of strong growth and rebirth.
Above all, in the second half of this season, Lando Norris has rolled up his sleeves. He has taken all the accusations from the media, the insults and used them to bring out something unexpected. Surprising even the most sceptical and those who would never have believed in him.
He still has a lot to mature, but what he has done this year should not be diminished. The mistakes he made should not be used against him. They were the ones that made him grow. Because from every failure comes a victory.
What we have seen this year is only the first part of an unforgettable period that could continue into 2025.
