Last Time Out in Las Vegas

We have arrived at the third to last race of this season; one of the most anticipated, the Las Vegas GP.

As F1 looks forward to another weekend in Las Vegas, let’s look back at some of the highlights from last year’s edition.

A Grand Prix that has caused a lot of discussion

Last year’s Grand Prix was a race that got a lot of people talking. In 2023, a new circuit was inaugurated for the first time, that of Las Vegas one of those projects that increasingly accentuates the showmanship of Formula One.

Even before the race started, there were several concerns that got the entire paddock and the media talking. One of the first problems was the cold and the respective behaviour of the tyres. A somewhat unusual choice was the decision to race at night with temperatures that were around 3°.

Third-row for Williams in Las Vegas

One of the highlights of 2023 was seeing Williams secure third and fourth-row start in qualifying. A magical moment for a team that had to face several difficulties. But above all, thanks to the car that found itself having a good feeling with the track.

And in part, the good result was also obtained thanks to Sainz and Perez’s penalties. This was a big cause for celebration at Williams.

Charles Leclerc’s pole position

Charles Leclerc is one of those drivers who often makes us dream in qualifying. And last year he made all of Las Vegas dream with his pole position. He marked a time of 1m 32.726s, blocking the way for his opponents, including Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen who found it difficult to beat his time.

Lots of action at the start of the race in Las Vegas

The start of the race was full of action. We saw Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc fighting each other to get the first place. After a first attempt, the two drivers entered the escape road – a move that then led to Max Verstappen receiving a penalty.

Going further back on the grid, we saw Fernando Alonso spin in the middle of the group. While Carlos Sainz touched Lewis Hamilton, Sergio Perez came into contact with Valtteri Bottas.

Charles Leclerc’s last-lap overtaking

Despite the difficulties, Charles Leclerc tried to fight until the end. Towards the end of the race, he gave a unique show.

After remaining in third position behind Sergio Perez, Charles Leclerc made an overtaking move that managed to steal P2. A move so important that it not only earned him the position but also earned him the “best overtaking” award.

Lando Norris’s violent clash

After the Safety Car restarted, Lando Norris crashed violently into the barriers in an escape route. The McLaren driver was subsequently taken to hospital for further tests. The team later gave positive updates on the Brit’s health.

Super Max Verstappen takes Las Vegas too

Max Verstappen’s race was marked by several difficulties – Leclerc’s mega overtaking, a 5-second penalty and a collision with George Russell. Three events that could have stopped his victory.

But Max Verstappen is known for his skill and tenacity. His was one of the most absurd and difficult victories of the 2023 season. A race that was anything but boring, surrounded by several unexpected events but which still led him to victory.

What to expect this year?

Las Vegas is a rather particular circuit, which is much discussed. A circuit that favours the showmanship, glitz and glam more than the sport itself.

Also For a second year, this year the drivers and teams will have to deal with the low temperatures and get the strategies right because Vegas must be a night race. This adds another layer of complication, as they will have to deal with a rather difficult time zone.

As I always say, Formula One is a world in continuous evolution, a race against time. But what will this weekend in Las Vegas have in store for us? We just have to wait and see…
