Formula E Tests to be Hosted at Jarama After Valencia Flooding

Formula E has announced the cancellation of its pre-season testing at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in Valencia due to the catastrophic flooding. This decision underscores the series’ commitment to prioritizing community welfare in the face of a humanitarian crisis.

The Current State of Valencia

The city of Valencia has been severely affected by the flash floods caused by the ‘Dana’ weather phenomenon.

The region has faced unprecedented rainfall, resulting in severe flooding, damaged infrastructure, and tragic loss of life.

The death toll has reached 158, with thousands displaced and many still missing. Cars are piled up, and emergency services are struggling to respond effectively amidst the chaos.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has visited the affected areas to highlight the urgent situation. The military is assisting in relief efforts. Valencia’s President, Carlos Mazón, has requested additional support:

“We are calling on the Army and available troops to strengthen logistics and aid distribution.”

MotoGP has also been affected. The season finale to what has been a tight battle fight was to be held in Valencia in two weeks time. Whether the race will be cancelled is yet to be decided.

Formula E’s Statement: Tests in Madrid

Formula E has expressed its condolences and support for those affected by the floods, stating:

“We have all been monitoring the tragic situation in Valencia. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by these terrible events.”

The organization emphasized the importance of not proceeding with the planned pre-season tests, in order to avoid diverting resources from recovery efforts.

In consultation with local authorities, the FIA, and the Circuit Ricardo Tormo team, Formula E decided to cancel the Valencia pre-season test. While it was logistically feasible to proceed, the organization stressed the importance of not causing distractions. They stated, “It is much better to support the local community.” This decision highlights their commitment to prioritizing Valencia’s needs over the racing calendar.

Given the circumstances, Formula E has announced that the pre-season testing will now take place elsewhere. It will be held at Circuito del Jarama in Madrid from November 5 to 8. This change allows the series to continue preparing for the upcoming ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, which kicks off in São Paulo on December 6-7.

Setting the Bar: Team Expectations Ahead of the Season

Teams are under pressure to gather data on these new machines and continue testing the GEN3Evo innovations, the new era of cars and introducing the new pit stop charging mechanism, Attack Charge, that provides a 10% power boost during a 30-second pit stop. They were all set to debut in Season 11.

These tests are particularly vital for the new team, Kiro Racing, which would find itself at a significant disadvantage. The lack of this testing opportunity could make it challenging for Kiro Racing to catch up and adequately prepare for the competition.

In contrast, Jaguar drivers Nick Cassidy and Mitch Evans are seeking redemption. After the title slipped through their fingers last season, both hope that the tests will provide them with a chance to regain their focus as the season approaches.

Additionally, the relocated testing will include the inaugural Women’s Test, aimed at enhancing female participation in motorsport. A significant initiative amidst the series’ ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the racing community.
