Red Bull’s controversial ‘bib’ device has dominated F1 News headlines. The defending Champions have agreed to make changes to the RB20 after teams accused Red Bull of using a trick to change their ride height under parc fermé conditions. Despite the contentious nature of these developments, Lewis Hamilton offered a very level-headed response.
Hamilton sees no problem with Red Bull going “over the edge”
Understandably, the news of Red Bull potentially using a device to circumvent FIA inspections is significant.
As Norris fights desperately to cut Verstappen’s lead in the Championship, fine margins can make the difference. And although Red Bull have denied using this tricky device, their agreement (after speaking with the FIA) to make changes is notable.
Moving forward, car bibs (located between the front of the floor and the chassis) will be scrutinised more tightly by the FIA.
When asked to comment on these developments, Lewis Hamilton gave the following responses:
“The name of our sport is all about innovation,” he told Sky Sports. “Red Bull have been the leaders, and they’ve innovated.
“Ultimately, all the teams look at the rules and they try and find how to massage those rules and get the most out of it. Even if it’s just over the edge a little bit.
“Ultimately, the FIA have put out a statement. But you just need to evolve and be better policed.
“At the end of the day, they’ve done a better job. God knows how long they’ve had that, and they’ve been winning Championships.
“Maybe that stops now. I don’t think that’s the one thing that’s going to stop them. But, yeah, I think everyone else – we’ve just got to be innovators and leading – rather than trying to catch up.”
Hamilton’s perspective comes with the nuance that one would expect from a 7-time Champion. Having spent so long at the front, the British driver is no stranger to these kinds of developments.
For Hamilton, rather than complain about loopholes rivals have exploited, the priority is for the team to unlock more performances.
Looking ahead to this weekend’s action, he will be eager to analyse the impact of Mercedes’ latest upgrades. Inevitably, Ferrari’s progress (the team he joins next year) will also be relevant for the Briton.
