Franco Colapinto in advanced contract talks with Sauber

Franco Colapinto has made an instant impact since joining Formula 1. Having made Q3, out-qualified Alex Albon and scored points in just his second race weekend, he quickly captured the grid’s attention. Because of this, Colapinto is a new entrant on Sauber’s shortlist for next season. Although nothing is set in stone, negotiations are ongoing behind the scenes.

Williams working on two-year loan spell for Franco Colapinto

Within the space of a few months, Williams have significantly strengthened their driver roster. Persuading Carlos Sainz to join the team was the first step, securing the services of a highly rated three-time race winner.

However, arguably the bigger surprise has been the revelation of Franco Colapinto. The 21-year-old is already immensely competitive, performing at a similar level to the far more experienced Alex Albon.

Considering that two of Colapinto’s first three F1 races were at immensely challenging street circuits (Baku and Singapore) his efforts are particularly impressive.

In light of this, Sauber are considering the Argentine as one of their options for 2025. He joins Gabriel Bortoleto and Valtteri Bottas on the Swiss-based team’s extensive list of options.

James Vowles outlines Williams’ plan B for Colapinto

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, Williams team principal James Vowles explained the team’s plans for Colapinto:

“For transparency, we are in conversations to see if that is a route for him,” Motorsportweek quotes him as saying.

“Where he could be on the grid with them [Sauber] for two years.

“He would be our reserve driver, he’d be ready to stand by should anything happen, and what I have learned in the last 12 months is that the F1 driver situation is not over.

“It’s good for us, we’re signed, but watch next year. I think you’re going to see a little bit more movement.

“There’s more opportunity out there as well at the same time, so having one of the best drivers on the grid available, I think, will be a strength.”

There have been several shock changes in the market throughout 2024 so far. Franco Colapinto joining Sauber on a two-year deal would be another addition to this list – though nobody could deny the Argentine is deserving of an F1 seat based on his performances.

Still, the good news for Colapinto is that Williams have a plan B if he cannot secure a full-time seat elsewhere.

As James Vowles points out, opportunities will likely present themselves in the near future. The Argentine can be optimistic that other teams will have openings over the next eighteen months.

Should any opportunities arise, Colapinto is in a strong position to capitalise.
