Mitch Evans has raced with Jaguar since his debut in Formula E, but how did he become the team’s flag-bearer?
Mitch Evans was born in New Zealand in 1994. He debuted in Formula Winter in 2007 and participated in three races during the season, before competing in the 2008 season. During the same year, Evans raced in the Formula Ford of New Zealand. The following year he competed in the Australian Formula Ford, finishing the season in second place. In 2010 the young driver took part in the Formula Toyota championship, winning the title. During the same year, Evans collected another title, winning the Australian Formula 3.
In 2011 Evans was selected by Christian Horner and Mark Webber to race for the team MW Arden in GP3. He finished the season in ninth place. He raced in the same category during the following year, winning the championship by only two points. In 2013, when he was eighteen years old, he moved to GP2, becoming the youngest podium-sitter of the category. He finished the first season in fourteenth position in the standings. Evans raced in GP2 also in 2014, 2015, and 2016, finishing fourth, fifth, and twelfth in the standings.
Evans’ journey in FE
In 2016 Mitch Evans debuted in Formula E Season 3 with Jaguar. He conquered his first points during the fourth round, in Mexico. At the end of the season, the New Zealander was in fourteenth position, with Jaguar confirming him for the following season. During Season 4 Evans collected the first Formula E podium for himself and the team, finishing in third position at the Honk Hong E-Prix. At the end of the year, he was seventh in the championship.
Evans raced with Jaguar also during Season 5. The season was positive for the driver, who collected his first win during the Rome E-Prix. Evans stepped on the podium in Berna and at the end of the first race in New York. During the last weekend of the year, he was one of the title contenders, but an incident with Lucas Di Grassi during the last lap made him finish the race in seventeenth place, while he obtained the fifth position in the standings.
Season 6 wasn’t brilliant for Mitch Evans, who remained with Jaguar. The driver conquered third place during the Santiago E-Prix and he won his second Formula E race in Mexico. Overall, Evans finished the championship in seventh position. The New Zealander obtained his best result up until that moment in Formula E during Season 7. Evans collected five podiums: in Diriyah, in Rome, in Monaco, during the second race in London, and the first round in Berlin. At the end of the season, Jaguar finished second in the Team Championships.
Season 8 didn’t start in the best way for Evans, who conquered only one point during the first three rounds of the season. The best weekend of the year was the one of the Rome E-Prix when the New Zealander won both the Italian races. From the Rome double-header Evans began a positive trend. He finished second in Monaco and he won the race in Jakarta. During the last part of the season, he obtained third place in Marrakech and won the Seoul E-Prix. At the end of the year, Evans finished second in the standings, behind Stoffel Vandoorne.
Mitch Evans had a difficult start to Season 9, but he then won two consecutive races: the Sao Paulo E-Prix and the Berlin round. He conquered another win in Rome and he conquered his fourth seasonal win in London. At the end of the year, he was third in the standings. During Season 10 Evans was once again involved in the title fight, without winning the World Championship. The New Zealander conquered the first win of the season in Monaco, climbing to the highest step of the podium also in Shanghai. In the last part of the season he fought against Pascal Wehrlein and Nick Cassidy for the championship, but he finished second behind the German. Jaguar won the Team Championship, with Cassidy ending in third position. Evans was confirmed with Jaguar for Season 11.
