F1 News: Ferrari upgrades “working as expected”

Ferrari were competitive on their first day of running in Monza, as a series of upgrades made their first appearance on the SF-24. Though drawing any conclusions would be premature, Ferrari are pleased with the early indications. Charles Leclerc has explained the team’s initial feeling.

Leclerc offers first reflections on sf-24 Monza updates

Leclerc and Sainz were consistently near the top of the timing sheets in FP1 and FP2. Their newly updated Ferrari challenger performed well as the Ferrari duo adapted to the newly surfaced Monza circuit.

For several reasons, Fred Vasseur’s team know better than to celebrate prematurely.

These F1 cars are extremely complex, meaning that even small miscalculations can have big impacts on performance. With the top four teams all showing strong pace, the finest margins will separate the top teams.

Ferrari happy with first indications

Speaking post-session, Charles Leclerc was generally pleased with the SF-24’s performance:

“It was quite a positive day overall. Our performance is good, driving the car felt nice, and the upgrades we brought to the car are working as expected.

“Our main focus will now be on balance, as there is still some margin for improvement on that side,” the Ferrari driver explained.

“The race on Sunday will be tricky for everyone, especially because of the new asphalt, so tyre management will be key.

“We are closer to our competitors than we were in Zandvoort. However, they are still very strong, and we will have a lot of competition tomorrow.”

Although McLaren have been the fastest team overall this season, the Italian GP circuit does not play to the MCL38’s strengths.

In the context of Norris’ dominant victory last season, Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull see this weekend as a crucial opportunity.

If Andrea Stella’s team can produce race-winning pace in Monza, it is difficult to foresee any circuits where they will struggle.

Therefore, Ferrari must ensure they optimise their upgrade package as quickly as possible.

Assuming they avoid the pitfalls that proved so costly earlier in the season, the Italian outfit stand a chance of competing at the front on home soil.
