Mick Schumacher is a leading candidate to replace Logan Sargeant at Williams before the end of 2024
In an unexpected turn of events, Mick Schumacher could find himself driving for Williams this year. The 24-year-old has spent the last eighteen months trying to make an F1 comeback since being replaced at Haas. Although Schumacher hasn’t landed a contract for 2025, Williams could turn to him as a mid-season replacement for Logan Sargeant.
Even before negotiations between Williams and Sainz were made public, Logan Sargeant’s position was precarious at best.
The British team have been openly exploring alternatives to Sargeant for some time, initially considering Valtteri Bottas as a replacement for the American driver in 2025.
However, the possibility of an abrupt mid-season swap is now on the cards. Sargeant’s crash in FP3, damaging the latest Williams updates, has greatly frustrated team principal James Vowles.
His patience with the 23-year-old is understood to be running out. Because of this, the ex-Mercedes strategist is evaluating whether another driver can complete the season alongside Alex Albon.
Nothing is set in stone at this stage, though Williams are certainly considering their options. As demonstrated when the team withdrew Sargeant from the Australian GP, they are not afraid to make bold decisions.
Mick Schumacher is under consideration
Before Williams extended Sargeant’s contract last season, the team held brief talks with Mick Schumacher. Toto Wolff reportedly tried convincing James Vowles to sign Schumacher – who was a Mercedes reserve driver at the time.
Whilst these talks never materialised into a contract, they demonstrate a history between Schumacher and the team.
If Williams have determined they no longer want to continue with Sargeant, Mick Schumacher is readily available. The 24-year-old has completed several tests with Mercedes this year, including a few alongside Kimi Antonelli.
He’s also spent this year competing for Alpine in WEC (the World Endurance Championship), including the 24 hours of Le Mans. According to many within Alpine’s Endurance programme, Schuamcher’s performances have been very impressive.
Then again, this did not translate into an F1 deal, with the French squad instead opting for Jack Doohan.
Still, if Williams choose to bring somebody into the team mid-season, there are only a handful of options available. As it stands, Mick Schumacher is being mentioned across numerous outlets as a suitable candidate.
As he works to manufacture a route back into Formula 1, a Williams seat could provide a golden opportunity.
The next few days should provide more clarity on the other drivers James Vowles is evaluating.
