Gabriel Bortoleto receives Alonso’s support in Audi talks

In recent weeks, Gabriel Bortoleto has emerged as a contender to join Audi. The Hinwil-based operation is under new leadership, with Mattia Binotto recently appointed as CTO. The former Ferrari team principal is understood to be interested in Bortoleto’s potential. For some time now, Bortoleto has been signed with Fernando Alonso’s A14 Management Agency. Because of this, Alonso’s reported visit to the Sauber motorhome in Spa is seen as significant.

Bortoleto is firmly on the Audi shortlist

Multiple drivers have been linked to a Sauber move throughout 2024. However, their main targets to start the year, Sainz and Ocon, both decided against joining the project. Because of this, the team has been forced to address.

With Audi preparing to debut their engine programme in 2026, they want to ensure all elements are in place.

Signing Nico Hulkenberg was a signal of intent about their ambitions. The next step is to complete what could be a very strong line-up at Hinwil.

Gabriel Bortoleto is now a serious candidate to join Audi. He is one of several drivers to enter the race for the seat.

Currently 2nd in the Formula 2 standings in his rookie seasons, Bortoleto is among the most impressive talents outside of F1. Although Antonelli has received the most attention in F2 this season, Bortoleto is also a prospect with immense potential.

Should the Brazilian retain 2nd place in the standings, he would be the highest-place rookie in the series since Oscar Piastri in 2021.

The 19-year-old would have room to grow at Audi in an environment where short-term expectations are relatively low.

Bortoleto would also be relatively patient if the team’s initial results are underwhelming – at least compared to an established driver.

Alonso’s visit increases speculation

According to formu1a.uno, Fernando Alonso was spotted visiting Sauber’s motorhome at the Belgian GP.

Bortoleto is signed to Alonso’s A14 Management agency – one of the many young talents under the Spaniard’s wing.

With the Spaniard obviously on a multi-year deal with Aston Martin, it seems plausible he visited the Sauber motorhome on behalf of Bortoleto.

After all, negotiations with the Audi-backed team will be happening in the background. With so many candidates available, conversations will continue in the background for some time.

There are still four rounds left in the Formula 2 season, meaning there are still opportunities for Bortoleto to boost his stock in the market.
