Ferrari in talks with former Mercedes technical director

Ferrari work to strengthen their technical team after key departures

The last few months have been difficult for Ferrari, both on and off track. Putting aside their downward development trajectory in 2024, the Scuderia has lost key personnel. Former technical director Enrico Cardile’s departure is the most notable. As Ferrari searches for his replacement, former Mercedes technical director Mike Elliott is reportedly under consideration.

Momentum changes quickly in Formula 1, and Ferrari have felt this more than anyone this year.

The Italian outfit is losing touch to McLaren and Mercedes, who were both slower than Vasseur’s squad at the start of 2024.

Ineffective upgrades have proven costly, especially given the competitive nature of the field.

Not only is Ferrari’s mid-season development costing them this season, but it raises questions for 2025.

A replacement for outgoing Enrico Cardile is yet to be officially announced. Until then, there is uncertainty about who will lead the Scuderia’s technical vision when the new regulations arrive.

Moreover, in the race to sign Adrian Newey, Ferrari are understood to be lagging behind.

Whilst securing Newey’s services is not essential to future success, the lack of key signings from Ferrari could begin to raise eyebrows.

That said, Fred Vasseur is working behind the scenes to bolster Ferrari’s technical team.

Negotiations with Mike Elliott

According to a report from it.motorsport.com, Ferrari are working on a move for Mike Elliott.

The 50-year-old was an integral part of Mercedes for over a decade, before an unsuccessful spell as Technical Director led to his departure.

Although Elliott’s contribution to the W13 left a stain on his reputation, his accolades cannot be dismissed.

He could play an important role for Ferrari as they restructure their engineering hierarchy.

Prior to Fred Vasseur’s arrival at Maranello, Mattia Binotto preferred to focus on promoting engineers from within Maranello.

Focusing on internal talent was the methodology employed by the recently appointed Audi CTO.

However, Vasseur is more focused on acquiring talent from across the field. Elliott would fit this description, representing the acquisition of a rival’s former engineer.

Whilst this agreement is unconfirmed, it represents a potentially significant move for the Scuderia.

As the team prepares for the transition 2025 and 2026 seasons, it is imperative that all the pieces of the puzzle are in place.
