Audi make a statement by signing former Red Bull Sporting Director Jonathan Wheatley
The last few weeks have seen significant changes to the Audi F1 project. It started with the arrival of Mattia Binotto, who is now the German manufacturer’s Chief Technical Officer. Not too long after, Audi have given another clear sign of their intentions by signing Jonathan Wheatley.
Wheatley is one of the most senior personnel at Red Bull, having joined Milton Keynes from Renault in 2006.
As Red Bull’s sporting director, Wheatley can be credited with much of Red Bull’s operational excellence.
The reigning Champions have lagged behind in the development battle this year, but their pit-stops, strategy and general efficiency have helped mitigate any losses.
Having spent almost two decades at Red Bull, his departure is obviously a massive loss for the team.
The Hinwil-based team strengthens
It would be inaccurate to suggest the narrative surrounding Audi’s F1 project has been positive in recent months.
Failure to convince key targets (like Sainz and Ocon) to join the team have raised question marks about the German brand’s potential.
The hesitancy shown by drivers to join the team has been accompanied by unexpected managerial changes.
Whilst Binotto brings huge experience, his appointment came in the context of upheaval between Andreas Seidl and Oliver Hoffman.
Therefore, bringing someone of Wheatley’s calibre is a huge boost to their ambitions.
Speculation continues about who will drive alongside Hulkenberg for Sauber next season, as they put the necessary pieces in place for Audi’s 2026 entry.
At this stage, there is no clarity on who the team will select.
However, for Nico Hulkenberg – who committed early to their project – this news is undoubtedly welcome.
The 2026 regulations present a reset that could change the pecking order. Having someone with Wheatley’s accolades provides an element of credibility to Audi’s ambitions.
Wheatley could also substantially improve Sauber’s operational efficiency, which could in itself be a crucial boost.
