Liam Lawson was a revelation in Formula 1 last season, and his efforts will not go unrewarded by Red Bull.
F1 is a sport where circumstances and external variables can often play a big role. This is especially true for rookies, who are forced to adapt in a very limited timeframe. However, Liam Lawson knows better than most about this unpredictable environment.
In recent seasons, the restrictions to pre-season testing have made this challenge even greater.
However, few have made their debuts in more challenging circumstances than Lawson.
The Kiwi driver was called at the last minute to replace the injured Daniel Ricciardo at Zandvoort. Without any dry running or meaningful simulator time, he was forced to learn on the job.
His pace, despite this, was very respectable under the circumstances.
In the subsequent rounds, with slightly better preparation, Lawson made no mistake about his speed.
Outualifying Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez in Singapore was certainly a highlight of the 22-year-old ‘s brief F1 stint.
Converting this top 10 appearance into points was a further indication of his potential.
Despite the controversial decision to deny Lawson a seat on the F1 grid in 2024, this is far from a death sentence for his prospects in the sport.
Red Bull confirms future plans for Lawson
Were it not for his Red Bull contract, other teams would have undoubtedly enquired about his services. This is almost certainly still the case, and the reigning Champions are well aware of this.
Helmut Marko has already stated in no uncertain terms that Lawson will be on the grid by 2025.
In addition, he emphasised that an earlier appearance should not be ruled out.
When taking into account the RB’s history, it seems perfectly realistic that a mid-season swap could be on the cards.
In any case, the Austrian outfit is aware that Lawson cannot be kept on the sidelines for another season. Between their currently contracted drivers (Perez, Ricciardo and Tsunoda), something has to give.
Whilst all these drivers will aim to to secure a contract with the senior team, the Kiwi’s emergence is an equally powerful incentive on the opposite side.
Lawson’s presence as a clear F1-calibre talent will be a driving force in Red Bull’s calculations this season.
