F1 news headlines have speculated on Logan Sargeant’s future, but all indications suggest Williams will continue with the US driver.
Williams hasn’t been exempt from participation in F1 transfer market speculation. The British outfit has made no secret of its satisfaction with Alex Albon’s progress this year, with the Thai driver elevating the team to 7th in the standings.
However, there have been some doubts regarding Logan Sargeant. These concerns haven’t come from Williams directly, but the American driver’s performances put him under some degree of pressure.
Prior to the American GP, the 22-year-old was still searching for F1 points. His failure to outqualify Albon was also frequently cited as an issue, especially given the longevity of the 2023 season. A series of incidents after the summer break didn’t help either.
With that said, Sargeant’s chances for a contract renewal seem higher than ever. Points on home turf, albeit thanks to disqualifications, tick off an important goal for the Williams driver.
Although his performances this year have been far from breathtaking, James Vowles is eager to keep the American. This much is evident in a variety of press conferences and interviews, where the British engineer’s defence of Sargeant is almost unwavering.
Positive indications for Sargeant
In combination with this, more concrete developments have transpired. The first is Felipe Drugovich’s contract extension with Aston Martin. Drugovich will continue as the team’s reserve and test driver in 2024.
Considering the Brazilian was mentioned as a potential threat to Sargeant’s seat, this is a positive development for Sargeant. More broadly, the fact that Drugovich was the only noted threat to Sargeant’s seat (and the only one notably mentioned) is a testament to Williams’ hopes to keep him.
The Grove-based team have also confirmed Sargeant will participate in the Abu Dhabi post-season test. Though none of the above information amounts to confirmation, it heavily suggests a contract renewal.
With another race on American soil scheduled in two weeks (Las Vegas), an announcement leading up to that Grand Prix cannot be discounted.
Considering the volume of talent that will be present on next year’s Formula 2 grid, Sargeant will be under increased pressure in 2024. Williams has been keen on retaining him this season, but expectations will be notably higher next season. With this in mind, the 22-year-old must use his next contract (likely a one-year deal) as a foundation to build upon.
