Logan Sargeant is pleased with his recent progress with Williams as a final decision for the 2024 season approaches.
In spite of the speculation surrounding several F1 teams, only one outfit is without a confirmed line-up for 2024. Williams is yet to confirm who will partner Alex Albon next season as they continue to assess Logan Sargeant’s level. As it stands, the American driver is satisfied with his last performance in the FW25 machine.
For much of the year, Sargeant has faced struggles in adapting to Formula 1. Even after nineteen rounds, he is yet to qualify his teammate. Whilst this is further evidence of Albon’s strong 2023 campaign, it shows the discrepancy between the two Williams drivers.
Although the American’s inexperience can justify some of this, his initial pace is notably lesser compared to other rookies like Liam Lawson or Oscar Piastri. Despite this, James Vowles continues to support his newest driver in interviews and press releases. The Grove-based team clearly wants to retain its line-up for next year.
Sargeant helped his care by securing points for the first time in COTA, a notable F1 milestone. Although points eluded him in Mexico City, the 22-year-old is pleased with his trajectory:
“It was another strong Sunday from my side. The pace was once again good, and I had some good moves…
“We had a fuel pump issue that meant we had to retire. We had the correct amount of fuel in the car but couldn’t get the fuel into the engine.
“We did our best to manage it, and the team helped guide me through it.
“Disappointing not to finish after giving everything I had after 71 laps, but there are plenty of positives to take away, and I’m happy with myself.”
Amidst the protective shield Williams has offered to Logan Sargeant, the next three rounds aren’t inconsequential. The youngster must avoid the mistakes that have crept into his driving since the summer break, as evidenced in Japan. Outqualifying Albon wouldn’t hurt either, especially as a decision becomes increasingly imminent.
Regardless of his limited experience heading into this year, it seems fair to asses that the American lacks the raw talent that other youngsters have shown. However, he can still give Williams enough reason to invest further in his development in 2024. He may not be a Piastri or Lawson-level talent, but Sargeant can still prove himself a reliable contributor in an intense midfield battle.
