Mick Schumacher executed a strong test for Alpine in Jerez. The French team is evaluating him as an option for their 2024 WEC team.

In the early phases of the year, Mick Schumacher was linked with a potential F1 comeback in 2024. Although Haas opted against signing the 24-year-old, there were hopes that other teams would offer him another chance. However, this did not transpire.

Williams was widely seen as the most obvious possibility, but the British team remains committed to facilitating the development of Logan Sargeant. According to reports, Schumacher was officially written off as an option for Williams several months ago.

Helmut Marko claimed that AlphaTauri could have been an option for the Mercedes reserve driver – were it not for conflicts with Toto Wolff. Whilst this claim is slightly more difficult to decipher, there is no denying the limited options in F1 for the youngster.

As a result, efforts have been concentrated on securing a seat elsewhere in motorsport. All indicators suggest a World Endurance seat with Alpine is his most likely destination for 2024. The French outfit is entering the Hypercar class next year and could use a driver of Schumacher’s calibre.

Negotiations have already been confirmed between the two parties. More recently, a test in Spain’s Jerez circuit has emphasised the commitment between both parties to explore all possibilities. It is understood that Mick Schumacher was highly impressive in this test, leaving a positive impression on Alpine’s personnel.

Alpine impressed by Schumacher test

The French team was already positive about signing the former Haas driver. The likes of Bruno Famino (Alpine F1 Team principal) have been highly complimentary of his abilities:

“He is still a young talent, with victories in Formula 2 and Formula 3 – as well as a smart, calm approach. He, therefore, fulfils several of our requirements,” he told German outlet AMuS.

As it stands, Schumacher can be confident of an opportunity for 2024. To be clear, A final agreement still hasn’t been finalised. Still, Alpine has confirmed that Mick’s performance in Jerez “provides the basis for further discussions.”

Following Ferrari’s victory in Le Mans, alongside the number of ex-F1 drivers competing in WEC, Schumacher’s potential involvement with Alpine speaks to the growing popularity of the series.
