Formula 2 title contender Frederik Vesti will drive the W14 in the first Free Practice session of the Mexican Grand Prix.
The news comes after a disappointing Belgian Grand Prix for the Dane. Pourchaire took the lead in the championship, while the Prema driver had to retire the car due to an error in the Formation Lap. Just the next day, Frederik Vesti opened up on social media. He spoke about how hard it was to get past yesterday’s disappointment, and he thanked everyone for the support:
“It takes time to process what happened yesterday. We put in so much hard work. And a small mistake had big consequences.
But this has only fired me up even more. There’s a long way to go in this championship battle and I’m determined to bounce back stronger than ever after the break.
Thank you for all the supportive messages. They mean a lot.”
Despite the disappointing weekend, Vesti is ready to return to fight for the championship. What motivates him even more is the possibility of being able to drive a Formula 1 car, alongside 7-times-world champion Lewis Hamilton.
When will Vesti be on track?
The session will be on October 28th, and Vesti will drive George Russell’s car. The Hermanos Rodriguez circuit will be an important training for the young driver who aspires to get into Formula 1.
It is the second time he drives a Mercedes F1 car. The first time was in Abu Dhabi last year for the Pirelli tests. The driver appeared enthusiastic after the tests, thanking the sponsors and the Mercedes team for giving him this opportunity.
The mandatory FP1 rookie session
Since last year the FIA has made a change to the sporting regulation. Each Formula 1 team on the grid, for two Free Practice sessions, has to give up one of their cars to their rookie driver.
To participate in this opportunity, the driver can’t have taken part in more than two Grand Prix and must have enough Super License points. Only in this way can he participate in the session along with some of the best drivers in the world.
In 2022 Theo Pourchaire, Logan Sargeant, Alex Palou, and Robert Shwartzman took part in the First Practice session for the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix.
