IndyCar returns to the historic Indianapolis Motor Speedway for this year’s running of the GMR Grand Prix, one of two races on the Indy Road Course and the sight of Rinus Veekay’s surprising win in 2021.
Last time out in Alabama, it was Arrow McLaren SP’s Pato O’Ward who made a late move on Veekay after the last round of pit stops to take the first non-Penske win of the year. Josef Newgarden’s 14th-place finish dropped him from first to third in the championship standings as Chip Ganassi Racing’s Alex Palou came home in second to leapfrog both Newgarden and St. Petersburg winner Scott McLaughlin for the championship lead. Colton Herta, after having strong showings throughout practice and qualifying on Friday and Saturday, got tangled up with McLaughlin late in the race, relegating him down to 10th.
Just like in 2021, the 2022 NTT IndyCar Series schedule features two separate stops at the IMS Road Course, one in May and one in July which coincides with NASCAR’s yearly stop in Indianapolis. In the 2021 springtime stop at IMS, it was Ed Carpenter Racing’s Rinus Veekay who took his first and so far only win of his young IndyCar career in the same race that saw Romain Grosjean claim his first IndyCar pole and podium.
