First, the 2020 Monaco Grand Prix was only postponed, along with the Dutch GP and Spanish GP – F1’s fifth and sixth scheduled events of the year.
Hours later, the FIA has announced the ultimate cancellation of the 2020 event that kicks off the greatest day in racing.
F1 cancels Monaco GP for 2020, delays new regulations
The cancellation comes among the concerns of the spreading of the COVID-19 virus, that has swept around the globe over the first part of the year.
The concerns and effort to stop the spreading have dislodged Formula 1’s first seven races of what was supposed to be a 22-event schedule.
There has been no word as to what the series plans to do if more events on the schedule get cancelled, but this gives them and the rest of the world some time.
The next event on the schedule that has not yet been postponed isn’t until the first week of June when the series travels to Azerbaijan.
Along with the latest round of postponements, Formula 1 has announced the delay of its new regulations that were scheduled to first appear in 2021 to the 2022 racing season.
The FIA and all 10 teams unanimously agreed over a conference call to delay the new-look cars until the ’22 season.
“Due to the currently volatile financial situation this has created, it has been agreed that teams will use their 2020 chassis for 2021, with the potential freezing of further components to be discussed in due course,” The FIA said in a statement.
The sanctioning body as well as the teams said that they will be in further contact throughout the year on how to limit the financial strain that the postponements will bring to teams, as well as ways to help them.
