WoO SC: Volusia’s DIRTCar Nationals gives First Look at 2020

DIRTCar Nationals

The past 10 years gave sprint car fans a look at pure domination, immense growth of the sport, and potentially a changing of the tide as far as championships go. 2020 could give us all three. The official World of Outlaws Sprint Car season will kick off Friday at Volusia Speedway Park in Florida with three race dates for the tour as part of the annual DIRTCar Nationals.

The event kicked off on Tuesday evening with the top teams heading out for a practice day before five-straight sprint car events from Wednesday-Sunday.

The first two were sanctioned under Tony Stewart’s Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions (ASCoC) with the final three being official points paying events for the Outlaws.

Leading up to the first race on the schedule, a familiar face in Brad Sweet found himself in victory lane in night 1 for the All-stars.

He came from third to beat Ian Madsen, starting 2020 where he left off in 2019 – winning his first World of Outlaws championship.

Sweet’s run at the title came down the final race of the year and ended a streak of five straight series trophies for Tony Stewart Racing’s Donny Schatz.

It’s sure to drum up more storylines during the season.

Of course, with the three Volusia dates, it would be inappropriate to not mention Roth Motorsports Daryn Pittman as a big contender for wins this weekend.

He started off his 2019 season with a pair of wins in Florida.

On top of the series regulars returning to compete with the Outlaws this year, some new faces are joining the tour to try their hands at it.

Mason Daniel will join the series under the direction of 122-time World of Outlaws winner, Danny Lasoski.

Lasoski will take the reigns as crew chief as well as a mentor to Daniel in his campaign for 2020 Rookie of the Year.

Wayne Johnson is no stranger to sprint car racing, as he has made over 150 starts with the Outlaws in his career.

However, he has never made more than 21 starts in a season and plans to in 2020 with TwoC Racing.

It all gets started on Friday night in Florida. Hot laps kick off at 5:30 p.m. ET and racing will begin at 7:00 p.m. ET. It all can be seen on DirtVision.com and live updates will be provided on Twitter at @RacingVault.

Congratulations, everybody. We made it through the off-season.
