David Gravel says put me in the points race

As the 2019 NOS Energy Drink World of Outlaws season has rolled on, it’s looked like Kings Royal winner Brad Sweet would provide a serious challenge to 10-time champion Donny Schatz for the top spot.

On Tuesday at Lernerville, though, a new driver established himself as a threat to be right up there with the big dogs.

David Gravel won the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup in the series’ second stop on the Month of Money, inching his way closer and closer to being a real threat to de-throne Schatz from the title.

Gravel started fourth in the 40-lap main event, jumping to the high side as the green flag flew. One turn into the feature race, he had passed the two cars to the inside to take second place.

After a plethora of cautions and restarts that left Gravel behind Kasey Kahne Racing’s James McFadden, Gravel finally beat the No. 9 off the restart with 25 laps to go.

He would lead the rest of the way out.

The win is Gravel’s fifth of the season and puts him 112 points behind Sweet for the lead in the standings, currently sitting in third place.

It’s a familiar spot for Gravel, too.

Gravel finished third to Sweet and Schatz each of the past two seasons and once more the year before that to Pittman and the No. 15. That’s three straight years he has been the second runner up in the points race.

He’ll try and break into that barrier and blistering pace being set by Sweet and Schatz as the Outlaws keep tearing up Pennsylvania. The series travels to Williams Grove for the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals this Friday and Saturday.
