Logan Schuchart wins Hard Knox Night, Dominic Scelzi punches golden ticket

Wednesday night, Logan Schuchart didn’t drive over the scales at Knoxville Raceway after winning the night’s B-Main. As a result, Schuchart was disqualified and his night came to a close. Although, on Friday, Schuchart redeemed himself.

After a long, hard-fought battle with Brian Brown, Schuchart crossed the line in first on Friday, taking the win and punching his ticket to the main event of the Knoxville Nationals.

“It was tough really,” Schuchart said. “You’ve got to expect Brian [Brown] to be really fast here at Knoxville. I just got around the bottom for a couple laps. I watched the B-Main, and the 39 car was fast down there. My plan was to run the bottom until somebody passed me.”

Well, about half way through the race, that finally happened. Brown went by Schuchart on the outside and took the lead for a moment, before Schuchart returned the favor.

“I was able to get back by on the bottom, but I wasn’t sure where I needed to be on the race track,” Schuchart said. “It wasn’t until we got into lapped cars that I could move around a little bit. I felt just as good on the top as I did on the bottom.”

The win was Schuchart’s first ever at Knoxville, and even though it won’t count as a WoO win, he was still thrilled.

“We’re just happy to win a race at Knoxville,” Schuchart said. “It’s pretty awesome.”

Brown finished in second ahead of Paul McMahan and Matt Juhl, earning the final transfer spot into Saturday night’s main event. After the A-Main on Friday, a special, last-chance bonus race is run that gives drivers a final chance to clinch their ticket in the main event. The race, the Speed Sport World Challenge, is compiled completely with international racers and Americans that traveled to Australia to compete in the Grand National.

Dominic Scelzi, a California native, fits the bill. After Brooke Tatnell jumped out to a big lead throughout the first 10 laps, a caution flew in the middle of the race, bunching the field back up. Scelzi took advantage.

Off the restart, Scelzi took Tatnell three-wide with James McFadden to take the lead going into turn one. Scelzi didn’t look back, and he crossed the start-finish line in first.

“We’ve raced here a lot the last couple of years,” Scelzi said. “We’ve had a lot of good runs and we’ve had a lot of bad runs. I really feel like as a driver, I’ve started to put it together here.

“To put it together here tonight after what I felt like was a less-than-stellar performance in the [A-Main] tonight was huge,” Scelzi said. It’s something that I needed as a driver right now.”
