Kevin Magnussen, Haas F1 Team Driver, said that the new Formula1 owners, Liberty Media, should not pay much attention to thoughts from drivers on improving the show. In Magnussen’s opinion, F1 drivers aren’t interested in entertainment because they “will just say what’s in their best interests”.
F1 Drivers Are Not Interested In Improving The Show
Magnussen’s remarks came after numerous claims that Liberty Media should be listening to the drivers on how to make Grand Prix weekends better from the show standpoint. To Magnussen’s credit, he included himself on the “selfish” side.
“All the drivers, their feedback will be in their own best interests. None of us drivers care about making the show better, we want the best for ourselves.I enjoy racing most when I win. I do not care, if I win, that’s it.”
Tha Danish driver expressed his opinion after F1 extended the main DRS zone on the Sakhir Circuit. F1 is looking to increase the number of overtakes, for next Sunday’s Bahrain GP. The Australian GP did not see many overtaking moves.
The number of overtakes does not determine better or worse racing. But that seems to be the established preconception among fans and F1 is trying to help increase overtaking moves.
Typical F1 overreaction
Magnussen said that it is typical for the Formula 1 world to overreact when a race isn’t the greatest. But he fears that overtaking might turn too simple because of exaggerated DRS changes.
“I think it was pretty good before extending the DRS. Is a typical thing that everyone tends to do: overreact to a bad race and make a big change. It might be too much. Because DRS, if you have too much DRS, it’s too easy.”
Bahrain Grand Prix weekend begins this Friday with the first and second practice sessions.
