Formula E Quietly Roars into 2018

Formula E may be the quietest of motor racing series, in terms of engine noise, the fantastic quality of racing speaks volumes and does so loudly.  Formula E, in the midst of its fourth season, is a wealth of talent and innovation and provides fans with some of the most exciting racing around, all the while giving them a possible glimpse of the future of motor racing.

The Teams

The fourth Formula E season has some of the most talented drivers racing today.  Auto manufacturers such as Audi, Jaguar, and Renault are branching into the innovative new series and investing in the future of racing.  Along with the evolution of the cars, which are entirely electric, teams are investing in future drivers, pulling drivers from Formula 3, Formula 2000, and even Global World Rally Cross, just to name a few.  The teams populating Formula E are as follows:

Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler Lucas di Grassi (BRA) Daniel Abt (GER)
DS Virgin Racing Sam Bird (GBR) Alex Lynn (GBR)
Panasonic Jaguar Racing Nelson Piquet Jr. (BRA) Mitch Evans (NZL)
Venturi Formula E Team Edoardo Mortara (SUI) Maro Engel (GER)
Dragon Racing Jose Maria Lopez (ARG) Jerome d’Ambrosio (BEL)
Renault e dams Nico Prost (FRA) Sebastien Buemi (SUI)
NIO Formula E Team Oliver Turvey (GBR) Luca Filippi (ITA)
Techeetah Andre Lotterer (GER) Jean-Eric Vergne (FRA)
Mahindra Racing Felix Rosenqvist (SWE) Nick Heidfeld (GER)
MS&AD Andretti Formula E Tom Blomqvist (GBR) Antonio Felix da Costa (POR)

The Season Ahead

The favorite for the championship this year is the current Formula E champion, Lucas di Grassi.  The talented di Grassi has shown repeatedly that he has the drive to help Audi dominate this series as it did in Endurance Racing. That being said, Renault, who has won the Constructor’s Championship the last few years, remains confident that their driver Sebastien Buemi will be tough for the current champion to beat.

Buemi is fast and is comfortable in his car.  The Renault cars seem to be dialed in on the engineering aspect and the battle between manufacturers is just as heated as the competition between drivers.  In addition, several new rookies, many of who just completed their rookie test this weekend at Marrakesh, showed great promise and great speed and may come into contention for the championship as well.

Three races for the season have been completed in Hong Kong and Marrakesh. The races were won by Sam Bird and Felix Rosenqvist. Rosenqvist of Mahindra Racing leads the championship in the 2017-2018 season.

Formula E, while being the youngest of the Formula 1 empire’s racing series, is as exciting as any series going.  The constant state of innovation, their highly competitive racing, and their drivers help to give the series an edge of the seat feel every time the drivers take the track.  Their passion and precision are reminiscent of the glory days of racing while standing on the brink of the future of the sport.
