The Power Unit

A long list of achievements has seen the Brackley outfit dominate the current era of F1 with four double world championships in succession (2014-2017). In 2016, Mercedes engine boss Andy Cowell commented that the power output was over 900bhp. Now he has said that it is close to reaching the 1000bhp mark.

Thermal Efficiency

The M08 EQ Power+ is also rumoured to be the most efficient racing engine ever after achieving 50% thermal efficiency on the dyno. Thermal efficiency is the amount of power an engine produces from its heat input

Dyno to Track

Cowell was asked how long it will take for the efficiency produced on the dyno to be replicated on track. He said: “We need to see how the power unit development goes through the winter and our prove-out goes through the winter, and it’s a balance with the car as well.

“There are engines running on the dyno – that’s one thing.

“When you go to total car lap time, that’s the bit where there’s work being done to improve the technology on the car to enhance performance.”
