James Brown, Adrian Wojnarowski Elected to NSMA Hall of Fame; Greg Gumbel, Sid Hartman Honored Posthumously

In a fitting celebration of enduring excellence in sports journalism and broadcasting, the National Sports Media Association (NSMA) has elected veteran CBS sportscaster James Brown and renowned NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski to its Hall of Fame.

The inductees also include posthumous honors for the late Greg Gumbel and legendary Minneapolis columnist Sid Hartman. The selections, determined by NSMA members through final balloting in December, were announced by executive director Dave Goren, highlighting careers that have profoundly shaped how fans experience sports.

James Brown

James Brown, affectionately known as “JB,” has been a cornerstone of NFL coverage for decades.

Currently the host of The NFL Today on CBS, Brown has guided viewers through pregame analysis with his signature blend of insight, warmth, and professionalism. His record of hosting the Super Bowl pregame show more times than any other broadcaster underscores his status as one of the most trusted voices in the industry.

Brown’s journey began after a standout basketball career at Harvard University, where he earned All-Ivy honors and later induction into the school’s athletic hall of fame. Transitioning to broadcasting, he worked across networks, including stints at Fox and as a correspondent for HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.

His three Emmy Awards and 2020 induction into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame reflect a career marked by versatility and grace.

Colleagues often praise Brown’s ability to elevate those around him, making complex stories accessible while maintaining unwavering integrity.

Adrian Wojnarowski

Adrian Wojnarowski, dubbed “Woj,” revolutionized NBA reporting with his relentless scoops and insider access.

For years at ESPN and previously at Yahoo Sports, his “Woj Bombs”—sudden, game-changing news drops—became a cultural phenomenon, influencing how breaking news unfolds in real time across social media. Wojnarowski’s career earned him multiple NSMA national sportswriter awards and, in 2025, the prestigious Curt Gowdy Media Award from the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.

His retirement from journalism in 2024 to take a front-office role at his alma mater, St. Bonaventure University, marked the end of an era, but his induction affirms his transformative impact on digital-era sports media.

Remembering Greg Gumbel

The posthumous honors add a poignant layer to this class. Greg Gumbel, who passed away in December 2024 after a battle with cancer, was a trailblazer in broadcasting.

Over a 50-year career, primarily with CBS, Gumbel hosted The NFL Today, called play-by-play for NFL games, and became synonymous with March Madness coverage.

His calm demeanor and versatility extended to Olympics and Major League Baseball broadcasts.

As one of the first African American network sportscasters to achieve such prominence, Gumbel’s legacy extends beyond the booth, inspiring generations with his professionalism and trailblazing presence. Sid Hartman, the indomitable Minneapolis sports columnist who died in 2020 at age 100, spent over seven decades chronicling Minnesota sports for the Star Tribune.

With thousands of columns and unparalleled access to athletes and executives, Hartman became a local institution, known for his “close personal friends” in the industry and unfiltered opinions.

His longevity and dedication earned him posthumous recognition, cementing his place as one of the most enduring figures in print sports journalism.

About the NSMA Hall of Fame

The NSMA Hall of Fame, established in 1962, now includes these luminaries among its ranks, preserving the rich history of sports media in America.

This 2026 class exemplifies diversity in eras, mediums, and styles—from traditional network television to modern digital scoops, and from play-by-play mastery to insider reporting.

Their inductions remind us that great sports media isn’t just about delivering scores; it’s about connecting fans to the human stories behind the games.

As the NSMA continues to honor peer-voted excellence, this group stands as a testament to longevity, innovation, and the profound influence of those who tell sports’ stories.
