The 2026 NFL season doesn’t start for another seven months, but it looks like NBC is already making changes to its coverage. And these changes mean a Hall of Fame coach will likely be missing from his role.
Andrew Marchand of The Athletic reported Wednesday that Tony Dungy will most likely not be returning to Football Night In America as an on-site analyst.

Dungy has been with NBC since 2009 as an analyst around their Sunday Night NFL broadcast coverage, first working with Dan Patrick and Keith Olbermann, then Mike Tirico in studio. He then moved to being an on-site analyst, working alongside Jac Collinsworth and Rodney Harrison.
Marchand says Dungy’s dismissal could be the first of several moves as NBC likely slims down its cast as part of a revamp to their coverage. Most of the studio analysts’ contracts (Dungy, Rodney Harrison, Devin McCourty, Jason Garrett and Chris Simms) expired after the Super Bowl, according to him.
Another possible move with Dungy would be to give him an emeritus title, much like NBC did with both Bob Costas and Al Michaels.
Dungy Drew Criticism With Lack Of Hall Of Fame Transparency
The Hall of Fame coach drew criticism even from his colleagues by not disclosing whether as part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee he voted for former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, who missed out on election in his first year on the ballot.
Harrison took Dungy to task for not revealing whether he voted for Belichick, who reportedly fell one vote short of election.
“I’ve seen his greatness. I’ve seen him design defenses to stop your (Dungy’s) offense,” Harrison said during the Super Bowl pregame. “Tom Brady wouldn’t be Tom Brady without Bill Belichick. And that’s the disappointing part of it, coach. And you guys got it wrong.”
Dungy said the blame should land at the voting process the Pro Football Hall of Fame uses.
“People think we voted against Bill Belichick,” Dungy retorted. “We did not. In fact, the same exact vote. As a matter of fact, if the same exact vote had taken place, same totals as two years ago, Bill Belichick would have been in and so would another deserving Hall of Famer and that is why I’m upset. That is not right.”
