ESPN may be the self-proclaimed world wide leader in sports, but that does not exempt them from making difficult financial and staff decisions. Yesterday, it was reported that former NFL player and current analyst Ryan Clark was being fired by the network.
What made his removal even more shocking was the fact that he was notified of his dismissal during the show that he was doing. He did not appear on camera for the last 10 minutes, but ESPN’s various social media accounts still used clips of Clark from the show to promote it.
Why ESPN decided to fire Ryan Clark
The news that Clark was being fired by ESPN was first reported by Andrew Marchand of The Athletic.

In the article that he wrote about Clark’s dismissal, Marchand said, “ESPN executives soured on Clark because of issues with some of his choices, a dynamic that peaked with an on- and off-air incident this past season involving colleague Peter Schrager.
On ‘Get Up’ last September, after Schrager defended Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb’s performance in an opening-night loss, Clark said, ‘That’s the non-player in you.’
Clark later apologized for his remarks to Schrager, but it appears that the damage was already done.
Furthermore, Marchand reports that the reason ESPN decided to fire Clark mid-show was because of the number of media inquiries and leaks that were going on online. They did not want him to find out about their intention of firing him Tuesday, so they canned him on Monday.
On Tuesday morning, ESPN laid off many other talented personalities. As they cuts were announced, Clark posted the following message: “Sending prayers and love to all those laid off today by ESPN. So many of you have poured your life into that company, & I know how you’re feeling right now.
“My hope is as this door closes another opens for you all. God bless!”
Included in the layoffs are long-time NFL insider Tom Pelissero and former NFL MVP Cam Netwon. Meanwhile, ESPN has agreed to long-term extensions with Tim Tebow and senior NFL insider Adam Schefter.
At this point, it is clear that the world wide leader in sports is trying to trim its talent pool to just a small number of personalities.
