Former New York Yankees radio announcer John Sterling, who called more games for the storied baseball franchise than anyone else in the team’s history, died at the age of 87 according to the team. Many in the baseball world too to traditional and social media to remember him.

Sterling’s long-time partner Suzyn Waldman, who has continued to call games on WFAN with Sterling’s successor Dave Sims, called in to the station’s midday show with Evan Roberts and Shaun Morash to talk about his legacy behind the microphone.
Former Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who is now working for Fox Sports, called Sterling “a true ambassador for the game,” and mentioned how good the broadcaster was to him while he was a player.

While Sterling was best known for his time in New York, he also spent a significant portion of his career at Atlanta broadcasting games for the Atlanta Hawks and Braves. The Hawks expressed their condolences for “a legendary voice in sports.”
