The Louisville Metro Police Department officer who arrested Scottie Scheffler during the 2024 PGA Championship is once again under scrutiny after a separate internal investigation.
Detective Bryan Gillis received a two-day suspension after an investigation into a traffic incident that happened on October 4, 2025. The department found that he violated vehicle use and body camera policies while responding to an emergency.
According to the investigation, Gillis drove his police cruiser on the wrong side of South Floyd Street while heading to the scene of a nearby crash. During the response, his cruiser hit a motorcyclist who was fleeing from the earlier collision.

Internal Investigation Leads to Suspension
The Louisville Metro Police Department said Gillis was working traffic control outside a University of Louisville football game when he received the call about the crash. His mother, who was also helping with traffic control at the event, was with him in the police car.
The department also found that Gillis failed to switch on both his cruiser camera and his body-worn camera before the collision. Investigators had to rely on surveillance video to review what happened because there was no camera footage from the officer. The incident marks the second time Gillis has faced discipline over camera policy violations.

How Scottie Scheffler’s Arrest Put Gillis in the Spotlight
Gillis first gained national attention on May 17, 2024, when he arrested Scottie Scheffler outside Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, before the second round of the PGA Championship. The incident happened after a pedestrian accident near the golf course caused heavy traffic and road closures. Scheffler was trying to drive into the club for his tee time when he misunderstood instructions from officers directing traffic.

Police said Gillis tried to stop Scheffler’s vehicle, but the car continued moving, causing the officer to fall to the ground. Officers then arrested the world No. 1 golfer and took him to the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.
Scheffler faced four charges of second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer. However, prosecutors later dropped all four charges after deciding the incident was a “big misunderstanding” caused by poor communication during traffic control.
An internal review after Scheffler’s arrest also found that Gillis had failed to activate his body-worn camera, leading to criticism of how the incident was handled. Now, with another investigation ending in disciplinary action for failing to follow camera policies, Gillis has once again found himself at the center of public attention.
