Billy Horschel has announced that he will undergo surgery on his right hip. The Ponte Vedra resident last played at the RBC Heritage in April and finished tied for 27th. Horschel’s surgery will take place in Colorado next week, and the 38-year-old says he is optimistic about making a return before the end of the summer.
Horschel Says His Injury Is an “Unfortunate Situation”
Horschel missed the cut at the Masters after finishing T-42 at The Players Championship. He also tied for second in the British Open last year but has had 12 starts this season, with seven missed cuts. The Grant-Valkaria native had four finishes among the top 25 and two top 10s: a T-9 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and a T-4 at the Valspar Championship.
The 38-year-old will be disappointed with his injury, considering his Ryder Cup aspirations. Horschel has never participated in the international event as a U.S. Ryder Cup team member, and his injury means he risks missing out on the squad just four months before the biennial competition. He is currently No. 16 in the team standings and would have been in the mix for a potential captain’s selection.
“Health update. After consulting with doctors and my team, I have decided to have right hip surgery early next week out in Colorado. It’s an unfortunate situation with so many great events left on the calendar but this is a preventative measure. I’m already itching to start rehab, get back to practicing and I look forward to returning to the course sometime around late summer/early fall. I would like to thank my family, friends, sponsors and partners for their continued support of me. I will share positive news on my rehab as I progress and I look forward to seeing everyone at the course again soon!” Horschel posted on X.
Horschel’s Eyes September Return
Horschel is currently 58th in the FedEx Cup standings and has earned $1,333,554, ranking 59th on the money list. He is exempt on Tour through the 2026 season thanks to his win at the Memorial in 2022. The 38-year-old remains in a strong position to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs with 16 FedEx Cup events remaining.
Horschel remains hopeful that he can return in time to defend his title in the DP World Tour BMW Championship, taking place from September 11-14. He could also feature in the FedEx Cup Fall events, which begin in mid-September. However, there are doubts over his participation in the British Open at Royal Portrush taking place in Northern Ireland from July 17-20.
