Gators Find Success: UCF Analysis

For the first time this season, the Gators were able to find success on both sides of the football. Picking up a pivotal win over the UCF Knights, the Gators rode a dominant first half to victory. Coming out the gate with some fire, the Gators methodically marched down the field on the first drive of the game. Showing this game meant something to them, the energy was noticeable throughout the building. Much maligned the entire season, even the Gators’ defense found success throughout the night. Proving to be the more physical team, Florida finally played complementary football. Austin Armstrong and his defense were a physical force, applying constant pressure. In a season in which there hasn’t been much to celebrate, this was a big moment for this team. Heading to Knoxville won’t be easy, however, this team has shown that they are not giving up.

Surprise Surprise

For the first time this whole season, the Gators’ defense made a true statement. Often looking outmatched and confused this year, the Gators’ defensive line needed to improve. With the Knights known to be a run-first offense, the Gators would have to emphasize physicality. Struggling in the win against Miss State, they allowed two running backs to go for over 75 yards on the ground. However, they held the UCF offense to under 275 total yards, largely containing the dynamic RJ Harvey. Providing constant pressure and stuffing the run lanes, this defense delivered a complete performance. The secondary performed as well, limiting quarterback KJ Jefferson to 165 yards and an interception through the air. Sacking Jefferson five times, this defense brought the physicality, which is what many fans had been waiting for. Taking away UCF’s ability to pass allowed Florida to focus their efforts on stopping the run.

Efficient Offense

Deciding to keep operating the two-quarterback system, the Gators got contributions from both passers. Graham Mertz led the way going 19/23 for 179 yards and a touchdown for another efficient day. Putting together back-to-back crisp performances, Mertz seems to have found his stride. Not having to look over his shoulder, head coach Billy Napier has allowed him more freedom in this offense. Not necessarily the most prolific downfield passer, Mertz is however highly efficient in the short game. For DJ Lagway, he once again failed to throw a single incompletion. Going 4/4 he threw for 50 yards and added 11 on the ground. Playing like a veteran, there is no drop-off in the offense when he comes onto the field. With big days from receivers Chimere Dike and Tank Hawkins, the offense looked dynamic. The Gators need to continue this offensive success next weekend against a much tougher opponent.

Conservative Approach

Despite the offensive success in the first half, the second half wasn’t quite as sharp. On defense, the Gators were still firing on all cylinders, desperate to not let UCF back into the game. However, it appeared that the offense took their foot off the gas in the second half. Turning towards a more conservative approach, Napier eased off on the creativeness. Even if he wanted to save some plays for Tennessee, he called a stale second half. Despite the double-digit win, it could have been even uglier for the Knights. Choosing to lean more on the run game and the quick passes, the Gators relied heavily on their defense. Missing a field goal was not helpful either, however it was over 50 yards. Against a better opponent, the Gators will need to have success in both halves. The conservative approach will not work next weekend.

Revenge Served

This was an important revenge game for the Gators on two fronts. Firstly, the last time these two played the Gators were embarrassed in the Gasparilla Bowl. Getting ran off the field in that loss, the bitter taste has been in the mouths of the fans for years. This time around, results were different, as the Gators’ defense came to play. Known for being a pounding rushing team, the Gators never allowed the Knights to establish the run. Secondly, UCF quarterback KJ Jefferson has some history with the Gators. Defeating the Gators in Gainesville last season, Jefferson and the 2-6 Arkansas Razorbacks stunned Florida. Winning with both his arm and his legs, the Hogs put up 39 points on an overmatched defense. Florida remembered that, and this time knew how to shut him down. Jefferson never found a rhythm and was suffocated by this suddenly impressive Gator pash rush.

Final Thoughts

This was a big game for both teams, especially if either team wanted to make a bowl game. Falling on hard times as of late, the Gators entered this affair with a 2-2 record, with neither win being imposing. Conversely, the Knights started the season off 3-0 before being thumped at home against Colorado. With both seasons teetering in the wrong direction, a win would be pivotal here. From the very first possession, it was evident which team came fully prepared. Using their bye week to their fullest advantage, the Gators used their pass rush and efficient pass game to cruise to a victory. Improving to 3-2 on the season, there are glimmers of hope for this downtrodden fanbase. However, the Gators can’t celebrate too long, as a trip to Knoxville awaits. The Gators will need a complete game to shock the world.
