In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the fabled Four Horsemen, Notre Dame will face Army in a return of the Shamrock Series at Yankee Stadium in November. The Fighting Irish will play Army on Nov. 23 in a game that will commemorate the Notre Dame backfield of Jim Crowley, Elmer Layden, Don Miller, and Harry Stuhldreher. Famed sportswriter Grantland Rice immortalized the players that season in the New York Herald Tribune after Notre Dame’s 13-7 upset of Army at the Polo Grounds in New York on Oct. 18, 1924. Both teams were among the top college football programs at the time.
The Shamrock Series started in 2009 when Notre Dame began scheduling home games on the road. The Irish defeated Washington State 40-14 at the Alamodome in the inaugural game. Since then, Notre Dame has hosted 11 Shamrock Series games across the country at different MLB or NFL stadiums. The Irish have won them all (11-0) with stops in Landover, MD; Chicago, Il; Arlington, TX; Indianapolis, IN; and Las Vegas, NV. Notre Dame last played a Shamrock Series game in Yankee Stadium in 2018, defeating Syracuse 36-3. The Irish also played inside Yankee Stadium in the Pinstripe Bowl in 2013, beating Rutgers 29-16. Notre Dame’s most recent Shamrock Series game came in 2022 when the Irish beat BYU 28-20 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
A Storied History Against Army
The November date against Army will represent the 52nd meeting between the two storied rivals. The Irish hold a 39-8-4 record against the Black Knights. Notre Dame last squared off against Army in 2016 in another Shamrock Series game. The Irish defeated the Black Knights in that contest, winning 44-6 at the Alamodome in San Antonio. Notre Dame has also faced the Black Knights at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn, Shea Stadium in Queens, and Giants Stadium in New Jersey.
Notre Dame’s largest margin of victory over Army is 62-3 (1973). Army’s largest margin of victory over the Irish is 59-0 in 1944. Notre Dame won the first ever matchup with Army in 1913, defeating the Black Knights 35-13 at West Point. All told, Notre Dame and Army have clashed at the home of the New York Yankees 23 times, including 22 games at the original Yankee Stadium (1925-29, ’31-46, ’69) and once at the current Yankee Stadium (2010), which opened its doors in 2009. Notre Dame won the 2010 meeting 27-3.
2024 Notre Dame Schedule Complete
With the announcement of the return of the Shamrock Series at one of baseball’s most iconic venues, Notre Dame’s 2024 schedule is now complete. The Irish began last season against an academy school at a neutral site, playing Navy in Dublin, Ireland. Quarterback Sam Hartman shined in the 42-3 drubbing of Navy in the Irish’s season opener a year ago. Hartman connected on 19 of 23 pass attempts for 251 yards with four touchdowns in his Irish debut.
In the 2024 season, the Irish will play Navy on Oct. 26 at MetLife Stadium before taking on Army in the Shamrock Series in November. The time for the 2024 Shamrock Series game against Army has not yet been determined. The game will be broadcast nationally on NBC and Peacock, the TV providers of Notre Dame football.
